re: What's the catch here with $19.99 Ray Bans? Are these fake lenses or something?

I wasn't saying it like he should be ashamed for wearing fake designer shades. More that he thought for a second they were real.

I bought a $200 pair of Costas and lost them within 4 months. Never again will I buy expensive sunglasses. I rock the fake Ray Bans now.

Yes. If real, you should get a pair in every color for $20 each. But for $20 each, they aren't real.

I gathered that by googlyin' it some more.

I wore my gf's at bayou fest b/c I left my sunglasses at home and yes, 'real' sunglasses make a big difference on your eyes if wearing for 8+ hours.

I won't pay no $150 for them though.

I only wear gas station aviators for the same reason. I average a new pair about every 2 months.

are these expensive brands worth it? How much better are they, really, than the $25 pairs you can get in your local pharmacy?

Spoken like someone who's never worn ray ban's before

For years, I swore by cheap sunglasses. But I got sick & tired of them breaking all the time, and I actually take good care of shades. So recently, I broke down and paid $120 for some Oakleys, and could not be happier. I didn't realize how shitty the lenses were on the cheap ones I kept buying.

At the frequency with which I was having to replace the cheapies, I'd definitely say it was a worthwhile investment because I'll probably wear them for at least 2 years.

The only time you really need legit glasses is in fishing type situations so you can see into the water. Can't do without in those cases

Haha being outside all day for anything else doesn't warrant them I suppose: taking kids to pool/waterpark, kids sports, yardwork, music festivals, vacations.

Real glasses have a real place.

Probably ppl that want a nice pair of ray bans and not some cheap lenses on cheap frames that won't last a couple of weeks. That's just a hunch though.

It's a problem when you're running or cycling for upwards of 4 hours and the sun is frying the crap out of your eyes. And to a lesser degree driving and hanging out in the sun. There's a definite difference in clarity and being able to see (polarized). IMO, at least cheap out on the frame but go all out on the lenses. It helps if a buddy works for Oakley too!

There's the snark this thread's been missing.

I've had the cheap Ray Bans for a couple of years now. I was never good with the book learnin' but I think that's more than a couple weeks.

Meant the lense coatings which help fishermen visually see things differently with polarized lenses. Which are NOT necessarily a must for the situations you described. In certain fishing applications, pilrized is a must or you can see better without any.

I've used Sunglass Warehouse in the past for my fake Ray Bans. No complaints.
