Meh. Not with Diana. I think Elvis has as strong case for #2 globally since JFK, though. The nature of media had changed. There are lots of parallels - "royal" language used, most folks sided with them in their marital disputes, everything they did or said seemed newsworthy - death and funeral was top story internationally for days/weeks.

I just think that, for whatever reason, the global response to Diana was noticeably more intense. Maybe that's perception.

Diana's death was big news, the entire world seemed to stop and pay homage when the King hugged the toilet for the last time

Everyone will have their own opinion for different reasons. Diana will probably be picked by most people.

For me on the celebrity/popularity status it would be this guy

and this guy

NASCAR got me through the dark days of 1990s LSU Football.

I would have named my youngest son after Davey Allison, but the wife nixed it. He didn't take any shite off of Earnhart or any of the rest of them. If they raced him clean, he did the same. Earnhart was the dirtiest, yet the most pissed when someone did the same shite to him that he did to everyone else.

Davey Allison is way underrated now. Many don't even remember him.

I was a big Rusty fan. I was stunned when Kulwicki died. I was hurt when Bonnet died. I cried when Davy died. After Dale died, I pretty much quit following NASCAR. It did help that LSU Football was on the upswing again.

I've always been a Ford guy, so disliked all the GM drivers. Kulwiki was a blow. They said he was a brilliant engineer. Pretty damn good driver too. Davey was big for me. Didn't watch much NASCAR after that. I liked Rusty Wallace once he went to Ford. I have a signed MGD hat by Rusty, from the 2nd Brickyard.

Probably the most shocking:

-Martin Luther King's assasination
-Diana's car crash
-Elvis's surprising death
-Robert Kennedy's assasination
-Steve Irwin's death ray

Those were just a few months apart and, to be fair, they don't hold the enduring "pop" because JFK was still relatively fresh in people's memories AND because they were so close in time to each other.

Having said that, there were riots associated with both - MLK's death prompted riots and there were riots at the Dems' convention (of course there would have been at the latter, anyway, but probably enhanced because of RFK's absence).

But, they are certainly up there in impact. There are A LOT of places, streets, parks, schools, etc. named after those 2 cats.
