Start in a diesel truck. If you can drive a 1994 F250 you can drive any stick shift.

Drive in an area with a good amount of hills, you will learn the catch point on the clutch pretty damn fast.

Seriously: find someone's old Jeep and ride around in the country. Jeeps are the easiest in my opinion

Is it possible to rent a stick anymore? Get someone who can to rent for you and then mess around. Or find someone who has one and doesn't mind teaching.

My grandpa drove to a parking lot. Let me drive in a circle for 5 min. Then drive back to their house. Stalled a few times that first week, and got somewhat creative on my routes around town, but it really is easy to pick up.

99% of the responses will be sarcastic.

Truth is to find someone with a really old manual transmission vehicle and let them show you.

Or go and rent a manual vehicle from Hertz, etc and have a friend pick it up with you. He can drive it away from the lot and then you can grind away until it feels right.

My brother parked it mid-hill and I had 3 shots at starting it without stalling. Got it in the last try:

Yes, I'm shocked there weren't 10 posts about going to porn sites to learn already.

I was coming here to say this very same thing. I learned how to work a clutch on a dirt bike when I was 11-12. It's was a piece of cake to learn to drive a stick bc I already knew how to gauge the gas/clutch.

get someone who is patient and find yourself a standard transmission. go out to a parking lot somewhere and start/stop until your leg is tired. it is a matter of knowing how to accelerate the engine while letting off on the clutch at the same time. once someone shows you, then you'd just as soon be practicing by yourself.

My dad taught me how to drive with a stick shift and I'm glad he did. They are all a bit different but it is like riding a bike. Once you learn you'll never forget. I'd practice in a mostly empty parking lot first
