Small - sun conure or quaker parrot. The quakers are extremely smart for their size.
Medium - mitred conure
Large - Sulphur crested cockatoo

All three of those are intelligent, social, and trainable. All just depends on your budget and desired size. I've had all three.

I like canaries….they are small so they don’t make much mess and they also have a pleasant song.

Parakeets and cockatiels have a lot more personality, though.

A long fricking time for all of them. Decades for the cockatoo.

If I could pick just one it would probably be the quaker. Just so smart and killer personality. Small bird maintenence compared to the cockatoo. Cockatoos are extremely fun too though

Male parakeets are very friendly and don't live forever.

When my son was about 9, we got him an African Grey parrot. Very smart birds with extensive vocabularies. My son is now pushing 40 and that bird is still young.
