Well.. I don't know if I can answer this question. This is why it is important to learn how to defend yourself. Teenagers do stupid shite. In HS, I have seen fights that started with someone going around saying something about the other person and what not.

Its not okay for someone to go up to someone else and start a fight with them, but that doesn't mean it will not happen. I think, because its a news story, it is perceived to be worse than it is.. Yeah, the girl got the shite beat out of her, but it seems like she just had some bumps, bruises and scratches. Live and learn.. And move on.

agree, that really wasn't much of a "beating," except to the helicopter parents that can't stand the thought of anyone laying a finger on their little Scruffy or Muffy

A girl shouldn't have to defend herself, there's supposed to be boys to that for her.

Aside from that, I agree 100% about teens doing stupid shite. Fights with younger kids are sometimes a lot more violent because they don't know or think about what they might actually do to the other person. I once saw a kid get hit with a lock in a sock at school, fricked him up so bad I don't think he ever made it back to school. Another time a friend of mine got in a fight with another kid and the other kid wound up being out of school for like 3-4 months and had to have facial reconstructive surgery.
