I never finished the course but I did enough in my insurance classes to tell you that this a terrible idea

But you can't help someone that doesn't want to be helped. If they wanna take their life, they'll do it and there's nothing you can do about it. You'll always wonder "What could I have done to prevent this?" But at the end of the day, it was their choice.

The best/only thing you can do is surround her with love and support and hope she eventually gets over it or reaches out for professional help.

I dealt with suicidal thoughts in the past and the only thing that took me out of it was being sent to the ER and the stuck in the psych-ward for three days.

You stick her in the loony bin for more than 48 hours she will realize that the thoughts are just thoughts and learn how to deal with them.

The trick to the loony bin is they wont let you leave until you have set up an appointment with a therapist.

There is probably some provision about not paying out a life policy if death is suicide.

Holy crap. Glad you got some help

I think everyone's had the thought run through their head at some point. Whenever I get down, I think about my family and friends I'd leave behind. I could never go through with it.

Sadly, some people don't have friends/family to lean on...

Cut them off!! I feel like playing into their pity party is only enabling them.

Had an ex that used to play this card

That's tough and someone who is experienced in dealing with these things could give you a much better answer, but when you talked with her were you straight to the point?

Just tell her "Look ___________, you continue to threaten to kill yourself and it is really concerning. To the point I can't sleep thinking about it (make it a situation where she might feel like she could help you) but I really want you to seek help or tell me you are just saying it just to say it and that you don't really mean it"..

Let her know that what she is saying is troubling others.. Maybe do something for her.. Plan a night out or something.. Is she hot?

The most frustrating part is she won't even deny she needs help. She knows she does and has admitted she does. She just won't see it through and do it.

Sounds more attention seeking than suicidal. Most truly suicidal people aren't very vocal about it.

Borderline Persoaity Disorder likely.
At the next threat call the sheriffs office for an Order For Protective Custody or Coroner's Emergency Certificate. They will take her to the ER and maybe committed for a week. They might start her on meds and schedule follow-ups with a psychiatrist and therapist when she is released

Get her help.

We've tried to get her to go to counseling. Even offered to pay for it, and she won't. I don't know how else to get her help.

Then you have done all that you can do. Just ignore her. Don't invite her to crap.

She might need someone to hold her hand through the process i.e. Make the appointment, go with her to the first appointment. There is a national suicide hotline, you can ask these questions. I'm sure this is a standard one.

Call 911. Tell them she's suicidal. Might be able to get an emergency commitment.

The ones who tell everyone they wanna die don't, for the most part, actually follow through with. Attention-seekers who will get it any way they can.
