In no particular order, my opinion...

MONEY MANAGEMENT:
budgeting & planning, credit, time value of money, investing 101, insurance, etc.

DEBATE:
How to see all sides, organizing and making good arguments

LEADERSHIP
Leading 101, how to inspire / set vision, project management, authenticity, growth, performance, collaboration...

CREATIVITY
It got extinguished in school (too little focus) and encouragement of original thought... (see Pink Floyd's The Wall, kidding, sort of)

There was a whole lotta chit that I have never used that never fit me or the world that I lived in. Education is too one-sized fits all, IMO.

I like the idea of requiring a debate class. I honestly think it could create a positive impact on our politics and culture.

Most people have no idea how to debate, much less articulate a complex thought or argument.

Money Management

We got a little of this somewhere along the way, Don't remember what class it was in, but the basics were covered.

As for the rest, you can get a lot of that in extracurricular activities. Although independent thinking does tend to get squashed. Probably moreso now that it used to be, and that's saying a lot.

I took a home ec class as a senior called Adult Roles and Gourmet Cooking.

I learned a little about personal finance and how to make cabbage rolls.

Cooking, for boys and girls.

Make both take the class, not like the olden days when girls took cooking and boys took shop.

It is sad how many people do not know how to cook a decent meal for themselves.

More money management as you said.

Also, more basic and health-related science, especially in high school and college. And more specifically, people should learn how to conduct research and how to evaluate research studies. I could write a research article comparing smokers to non-smokers, and in the smoking group only include the smokers that lived over 80 years and never had cancer, while in the non-smoking group only include people that got some form of cancer and died before age 50, and conclude that smoking makes you live longer. I bet 80% of Americans would believe it.

Non-science people dont know shite about science, and science people dont know shite about business. No one knows how to evaluate research studies, and no one knows how to find legit science and medical information. People believe bullshite they read on blogs written by dumbasses that are convinced that their child has autism because they drank diet coke and had an ultrasound during pregnancy.

I would love to see all of the things discussed in this thread taught. Unfortunately, too many of our kids are illiterate and can barely do simple Math. We spend so much time remediation that we simply run out of time to be able to teach other subjects.

Parents and communities need to put a premium on education or children will never be successful. Personally, I blame welfare. It creates generational poverty. Why learn when you can have a house, food, cable, phone, and new shoes?

It's a damn shame.

Make welfare payments dependent on the grades of their children. Good grades equals more money. Bad grades and their check is "penalized"

Then they will care about education.
