There is no one year nursing program. Your friend must be an LPN(which is useless to become these days so congrats on your friend wasting her money to go work in a nursing home).
RN is registered nurse. You can have a nursing diploma like myself and still be an RN. Or you can have an associates degree or your BSN. You still take the same nursing boards and hold the same nursing license. The difference is amount of schooling. Some hospitals will only hire nurses with their BSNs now. A nurse with a BSN can advance and get more schooling to earn her masters and become a NP(nurse practioner).
As for the question about nurses sleeping with doctors I'm sure it happens but I only personally know of one nurse that does this. I never chased after doctors(even when I was single), never wanted to date a doctor.
