What stops employees from cashing in on gift card promos?

Just saw an Outback commercial where you get a $10 bonus card with every $50 gift card purchased. What stops a waiter from investing $1000 for $1200 in gift cards and then swiping them every time their table pays cash (pocketing the cash)? I'm sure they could off-load their gift cards after a few nights work and make an extra $200 easy.

Clearly the manager would probably notice that you have no cash sales after a few days, but would this be illegal? Would you consider this theft?

It shows up on the receipt as a gift card, not cash.

So it would not work for tables that wait for change and receipt, but I know I've just left the cash+tip on the table many times and walked out without waiting for a receipt.

Seems that the % of cash customers would be low to the point that it would take forever to get a return. Longer than I'd want to wait tables at outback, for sure.

They are waiters for a reason. They are way to lazy to invest this amount of time and money to make $200

So in your hypo, a waiter spends $1000 of his own money for $200 in free gift cards. Then he pockets the money and pays with the gift cards each time someone it's with cash?

1)that's a lot of work for $200.

2)there are better, more efficient ways to rip off a restaurant than that

I guess. Just watching TV and thinking logically. I'm a problem solver.

It would be hilarious if someone actually did this and subsequently got fired and stuck with $1200 worth of Outback gift cards

Seems like a better short-term ROI than the stock market.

I bet a lot of Outback regulars buy these for themselves.
Like getting what ? 16% off?
I'd do it if i went to Outback often.

Because its easy to track the gift cards and employee ids. Asset Protection would be all over that with quickness if they are good.

It's alot easier to just to be a pizza boy and get in cahootz with a shift manager while working day shifts. You simply don't ring up a few cash orders taken during that shift (often just a manager, one insider, and a driver), split the booty. This can make a manager/driver $300 extra a week each easily.

The catch is greed, cameras, and food cost. Keep all that on lock and you're golden.

I haven't participated in this. Just know that's how alot of them fund their opiate addiction.

Know a guy who did this with GroupOn at IPO in baton rouge. Made a killing. 120$ dinner bill? ring up a 100$ groupon and pocket all the cash plus the tip. make yourself a 100$ a table easily.
