return to neighborhood schools instead of bussing kids all over the place,
The rampant bussing ended a few years ago when the US Justice Dept and a Federal judge declared the EBR system unitary and the suit was settled.

lots of kids in private schools come back to public system
I agree with you on this. And there is not enough school rooms to hold them.

so BR kids will be bussed in to St. George schools?

this doesn't sound right?

teachers will take lower pay to work in a better environment. just ask every single teacher who works at a catholic school

You are correct. There is some minor dislocation of students because of school space shortages but not for deseg purposes.

No worries about BRH, if the St George thing goes through all the schools in that district would be top notch

And let me retract the "all" portion of that statement, sure there will be some underperforming schools "think Gardere area" but just as Ascension has Donaldsonville

No. That would be illegal. I don't know what I wrote that gave you that impression.

Same schools, same students. What changes?

and as far as the extra taxes on st. George, I've said this before...
we will pay without complaining if we actually get results.
i feel like i'm a good sample of the population and honestly i wouldn't care if my property tax doubled if it went to a great school district. my kids are in private school and i have no plans to move them.

Tell us about it.

I know some students who attend EBR magnet schools not located in the St George area are provided bus transportation to their magnet school which are not near where they live. Is that what you're referring to?

The only ways I could imagine kids still getting bussed to schools outside of their neighborhood are through the following circumstances:

Magnet/gifted schools
Neighborhood school is in RSD
Neighborhood school is listed as failing (but still not taken over by the state)

I don't see where kids are stopped from going to their neighborhood school if that school doesn't fit those categories.

sorry Russian..i imagined a comma after your "no"..
instead of no students are bussed in i saw "no, students are bussed in"

ok so i think the appeal of the st. George district will be in the return of the middle class to the public school system, and also the neighborhood schools. teachers want to teach kids like this.

Right.

I live in the St. George area and have looked up the district boundaries for the nearby elementary schools and they are pretty damn "neighborhood" IMO.

They probably wouldn't double, although the school property taxes did double in Zachary when they started their own school district.

At least you're honest about it. If the people there are willing to accept higher property taxes to get their "own" schools, I'm fully supportive of them.

The problem that I see is the leaders of the breakaway effort are lying to the people by telling them no new taxes will be needed. All anyone has to do is look at Central and Zachary to see what happened to their school taxes.

But did Central and Zachary claim sales tax revenue from major commercial properties like the Mall of Louisiana and Perkins Rowe?

Seems like St. George would have a better "endowment" to work with.

I have a close relative who is a teacher in an existing St George school and the teachers know they will have the same students they have now, with possibly a few more when the EBR magnet school students are required to move to St George schools and some private school students return to public schools.

There is already overcrowding now in some of the St George schools with large class sizes, so..... .

Parents of two East Baton Rouge Parish School students say their kids were involved in fights at the school transfer station on North Sherwood Forest Avenue last week.

Mary Brown's daughter Danesha was involved in a scuffle. "I was shocked the way [the sheriff's deputy] manhandled her," says Brown. "I understand the fight that they had but he was wrong for how he shoved her down."

A video tape showed the fight and a sheriff's deputy intervening. The East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office issued this statement:

The East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office Internal Affairs division received a call from a mother on Friday in reference to deputies breaking up a fight that her daughter was involved in at a school bus transfer site last Thursday. The mother stated she had a video of the incident. The detective in IA attempted to make arrangements to meet with the woman to discuss any concerns she might have as well as to view the video. The woman stated she was attempting to make copies of the video for other parties and would have to get back with the detective. When the detective recontacted her about meeting, the woman cursed the deputy, stated she would rather go to the media and hung up the phone.

At this time we have not received a formal complaint of the incident. WAFB has provided the Sheriff's Office with the video, and we will review it, question the parties involved and take action if deemed appropriate.

Another parent told 9News his son was sucker punched the day before the previous incident. His son is scheduled for surgery on Wednesday to repair his jaw that was broken in two places.

School superintendent Bernard Taylor tells 9News somebody will be getting into trouble. "It's not an ongoing issue from what you described we had three students who made some pretty bad judgments and they are going to pay for those bad judgments because we have disciplinary procedures in place that are employed when students do things that are clearly not in line with what we expect, and we're going to make sure that the appropriate disciplinary action is taken," says Taylor.

The East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office is currently investigating the incidents.

Why would they have to reimburse for the schools? People in the St George area have been paying taxes for schools all along. It's like being charges twice for them.

Agreed. But there are neighborhood schools in the district now. I just wish the middle-class would just return now in current system. Would be a lot easier. And if enrollment in the area boosted, the district would be forced to build more schools. I guess it's a chicken and egg thing.
