I remember as a kid my grandpa would spit on a piece of straw, shove it down the hole, then he would somehow fish them out of there. But I can't remember what they are.

Those cow killer ants maybe?

I have some in my yard and I'm trying to show my boys how to do it, but I can't get any of them out. They're wiggling the straw and shoving it out an inch or two, but that's it.

Anybody know what I'm talking about?

We used to take one of these..

and put it in the hole. Then snatch it out when it starts moving. We called them doodlebugs.

So you used to fish them out too? I had forgotten all about it until I saw those holes in the yard today.

No, not a roly poly. These had pincers.

We always called them chicken chokers. Don't know what the actual name is. We'd take a piece of grass and catch them like the poster above said

What about the holes that are about an inch wide and have about six inches of dirt shaped into balls?

That’s a crawfish hole. Not a chimney.
