I went to catch a perfectly average Delta flight out of AEX Thursday and right as I got out of my car I heard one of the loudest sounds I've ever heard. Finally I saw a military plane in the distance, and right after it was airborne it looked like it was flying straight up. Amazing to see. So what kind of plane did I see? F-15? How often would one of the planes be flying out of AEX? What is the military/civilian relationship there at this point? What is left of Barksdale? It was cool.

Well, Barksdale is still a major player in the World theater with it's B52 bombers. It's in Bossier City btw. England AFB was in Alexandria. I remember that A10's were prevalent there. If it goes zoom straight up, it's some sort of fighter jet.

My bad, I meant England. It wasn't a A10 or a bomber, definitely a fighter.

Has to be something just passing through. There's no military presence there at all any more.

This is what I was trying to figure out. It was pretty dang weird (and cool) to show up for a commercial flight and see one of those beast taking off.

Most likely a T-38. They can stand those things up pretty well.

Fort Polk flies soldiers out of there regularly.

All kinds of military hardware stop over there, the barbeque joint next to the Cracker Barrel by I49 has its walls covered with squadron patches from aircrews that have eaten there when stopping over.

Can you explain a quick history there? I was there for an interview and stayed at Parc England hotel. The jets display was really cool.

It used to be England AFB. You can still see barracks and other buildings around there. A10's were stationed there at one time, and A7's before that.

To the OP, you will see military personnel there every day; individuals flying commercial to and from Ft Polk, as well as entire units flying in on military aircraft for rotations at the JRTC. I think any fighter you see is likely to be a stopover, though.

A good place to see combat aircraft is the Laffy airport. There's a maintenance facility there that does a lot of military overhauls. I've seen Apache and Blackhawk helicopters there, and even Air Force One.
