What is your take on this situation?

if someone ask(sic) to borrow a $600 piece of equipment, while it is in their possession they break it and do no(sic) repair it -- and when you ask them to return the property that you put in their hands, they leave it on your porch under something and it is stolen are they at fault? After you asked them not to leave it outside, they do so any way, are they wrong?

Of course they are at fault.
Whoever this borrower is should never be trusted again.

Yes of course they're wrong for it being stolen. Need more info to comment on the repair part.

Sounds like he has done this before and your friend is a dumbass for letting him borrow it in the first place!!

Yes, and I know 3 people who have done almost that exact thing to me. Not stolen, but broken or damaged when they returned it. Oh and they made sure to return it when they knew I wasn't going to be home. One actually took off of his work to return it while he knew I was at work. One of these is actually a relative. He still acts like it was no big deal and has asked to borrow other items of reasonable value since. I have resorted to asking for a cash deposit as part of the deal. He laughs when I say it, but I've stuck with it. He won't borrow from me after I ask for it.

100% the borrower knows that he's at fault. He's not owning up because he doesn't have the money to replace the equipment. Probably didn't even have the money to fix it. Pretty open and shut case. The bigger question is whether he has $600 worth of arse you can whoop.

Sounds like you have very shitty friends and live in a shitty neighborhood.

I think the answer is obvious but I like being a contrarian so I'm gonna say you shouldn't loan people shitty equipment that breaks.

How is the borrower at fault? That's like if you loan me a knife and you kill your wife with another knife then somehow that murder is my fault?
Possession is eight tenths of the law, and she's technically still your wife.

If you break something that is in your possession, you must repair or replace the damage. End of story.
