What is the saddest event you've attended?

My brother-in-law passed away this year. He was an active duty fireman, and they did "last call" at his funeral. He had a full military funeral the next week with the gun salute, which was also jarring, but it was nowhere near as sad as the firefighter funeral.

The funeral of my 23 year old nephew who was killed in a small plane crash. A close second was my Dad's funeral about a year later.

Aside from my dad's, my cousin's funeral that was a shift commander with the Sheriff's Dept. They also did the last call. I was fine until then. I've never seen so many grown men, many in uniform break down.

A combination of the funeral of a family friend who died young and suddenly and the funeral of my Aunt who died tragically in a car accident a few months later. I can't choose one over the other. That was a rough year.

A funeral for two brothers and a sister, ages 18, 16, and 14.
They left behind their parents and a 6-year old brother.
I knew the family for 13 years before that tragic car wreck.
Pretty horrible.

Funeral last March for my coworker's children that were killed in a car accident. Her 3 oldest killed (12, 9, and 8) as were their grandmother and pregnant aunt(aunt only 21 years old and 20 weeks pregnant)They had one huge funeral for everyone. Pictures of them over their caskets....including a sonogram picture of the baby the aunt had been pregnant with.

How young?

I could not imagine the pain your coworker is going through. My sister had to bury her 1.5 year old and it took 4 years before I knew she was going to be ok. She still functioned, but was nowhere near the same.

She is in therapy and on a couple antidepressants. She holds it together at work though. Considering all the kids we care for that come from car accidents...I don't know how she works on Peds still. She got married to father of youngest child right afterwards and they bought a new house.

So she still has children living? I bet she's holding onto them tight!!

I've buried a handful of friends that served in the military. Always tough seeing parents bury a child
