What is the purpose of a marrige license?

I was just thinking...a license is typically required when the government wants to regulate something...

I'd say it had everything to do with it, shacking up is better as long as you heed the common law statutes in whatever state you're in.

We've been programmed to believe that have we have to get married, when really, it is an antiquated sham. Plus, taxes.
