What is the difference between a legit religion and a cult?

To me, they are one and the same. It seems that people recognize a cult as a religion once the cult claims large numbers of followers.
Therefore, if popularity and number of devotees is what changes a cult into a religion...what is the magic number? 1 million? More? Less?
Is Islam a cult or a religion. Angola believes Islam is a death cult and therefore has banned Islam from Angola.
Is Christianity a cult or religion?
What about Mormonism?
What about Scientology?
What about College Football?

Serious answer...Openness...the more open they are with their faith the less likely they are cult-ish. The more secretive, the MORE likely.
