Falconhead has a lot of elevation change, scenic vistas, and hill country feel. This would be my #1.
Avery Ranch is a nice track. Doesnt have the elevation of Falconhead, but still a nice hill country feel.
The barton creek courses are real nice, but for resort guest only I believe.
Star Ranch is another option. Noce course but is wide open and the wind can eat you up.
Edit- I forgot about Wolfdancer at the Hyatt resort. Nice course with unique geography.

And expensive. River Place Country Club is almost as good and posts some public tee times, which Barton does not.

There's a couple good ones in Bastrop a little south. About 30 minutes outside of town, but much better priced and not crowded at all.

Wolfdancer is one. It is top-quality and part of Hyatt Lost Pines. I think it's $90.

Forgot about River Place, unique place.
There are a lot of good courses about an hour outside of Austin at Horseshoe bay Marble Falls area.
Falconhead or Wolfdancer are about 30 minutes from downtown in different directions.

If you're already from the South, what difference does it make ? I don't think Austin is any hotter than south Louisiana.
