how they work varies tremendously.

Some just supervise PT.

some do hands on manipulation.

They're real doctors who goto residency programs and practice medicine just the same as MD's. The first time I heard of a DO I thought the people were fricking with me that it was a thing.

Literally the first link on google fully explains what it is

Nowadays with a high number of DOs going to MD residency programs, there isn't too much drop off between then two. Of course how they are taught during medical school is different, but I would trust an MD residency trained DO in primary care settings.

Nearly the same as an MD. There's a DO school in Georgia btw.

More holistic treatment. The DO is going to have a "mind, body, spirit" sort of philosophy vs. the MD's "medications and procedures" philosophy. Both attend medical school and go through internship and residency programs.

Both can be licensed to practice medicine in the U.S.

EDIT: Heh, there's either a pissed off MD or a pissed off DO running around this thread and giving out downvotes like a drug rep's samples.

There's not much difference anymore. Many DO's are getting into allopathic residencies, which is where you actually learn how to be a doctor. They used to be mostly in the Midwest, but recently more osteopathic schools have been opening in the south.

Someone with a medical degree who wasn't smart enough to get into an MD school.

Foreign medical grads and Caribbean grads have MD degrees, so you can't just judge by the initials.

My uncle was a DO. Spent many years in the Army, then private practice as an OB/GYN. He is retired now, but caught a lot of shite early in his career for not being a "real doctor." He always told me it was his residency that counted, but I still teased him about being lower than a dentist.
I think times are changing with the thinking towards this. Just look at all the medical students going to the Carribbean for school now. A few of my friends went that route. I was skeptical, but they both did residencies in the US and are in private practice now.
