As a nation we've become all about "me" and are no longer hungry.

Those freeloaders get a check off us, I get that, and I don't like it either.

Anyway, back in the day folks were happy to work on holidays, overtime, whenever they could so they could feed a family and have two shirts instead of one.

Now folks act like it's a disgrace to be asked to work late, on holidays, weekends, etc.

I am damn near 70, retired off one job, can soon retire from another but I work all I can, give all I can, save all I can, and do a helluva lot of charitable contributions.

So I don't feel sorry for your arse for having to work.

Oh Christ man, it was a simple question about an employee the OP has, not an indictment of an entire generation.

No shite. My boss will come up to me on Friday afternoon and tell me to come in on Saturday or send me an email late Thursday night or Friday morning. Thems the breaks. At least I'm getting paid for it. I know salaried people who work every weekend and don't get squat.

Fml.

If I was hourly I'd be making 2x what I am.

These 70 hour weeks are working my nerve.

it's not overtime it better be a paid 50 hour week, Monday included I mean
.
that is correct. 50 hours straight time

Yeah that won't fly with the Department of Labor. Over 40 is overtime regardless of if they worked. If it is on a payroll check it has to be time and a half.

Yea this seems like something that should be spelled out in company policy. Observed holidays will be made up the same week.

Or at least notice given well in advance.

As an employee it would tell me a lot about my boss unless he had a very good reason and people could opt out. If it's just lack of planning/organization and he's penalizing employees instead of himself, that's a character issue I wouldn't want to work for

Any time at all. Once you leave on your last scheduled day don't answer your phone.

But he only will have worked 40 hours. 10 is Labor Day holiday pay, which does not have to be time and a half

Honestly, if your boss says to come in, you go in. This year I've been summoned the night before for "emergency" situations that came up for places hours away. That's why I'm out of the service industry. Every situation was an "emergency". It sucks, but when you have to put food on the table, your options are limited on how pissed you can be because you have to work.

Why does he have to come in? Is their a big deadline or short staffed? I have every other Friday off but have had to go work on my Friday off every now and then

I'm sure it depends on the line of work but I've never been in an industry where any hourly employee could be force to work outside of their normal schedule.

If that is not normal policy for that company but the boss still expects it, then the employee should be looking into planning an exit strategy/looking for a new job imo.

If it's the norm and within company policy, then he should say, "see you on Saturday"

I think it's funny how many guys think it's ok to show up every single time with the "see you in 15" line if you're not getting paid on call. F that, work-life balance. If I got plans with my kids on Saturday, unless the sky is falling at work, they'll live without me for the day. Though that's not actually true in my case as I'm salaried but on call 24/7...FML!!!

That's fricked Rogue. You can't hold employees for a full work week because of a paid national holiday.
