I've heard some charge as much as $700 an hour while most in Louisiana charge around $75. Is paying an attorney $700 mean they are more qualified than the attorney charging $75?

Nothing indicates that this attorney is better than another.

No they're all pretty much the same. Go ahead and get the cheapest guy you can find for your murder trial. You'll be fine.

For what? Different rates apply to divorce, business, insurance defense, etc.

What is a typical rate for each of those areas? My GF is looking right now to see if she should concentrate in a particular field and was considering go out on her own which is why I asked about the $700 v. $75 hourly rate question.

What a great question, OP. It's good to ask questions in such broad terms. That way you know you get the best answer.

Why is your girlfriend (who apparently is an attorney) dating such a simpleton like yourself?

Tell us about that big ole dick you got, boy.

There are people who simply love the arcane, minute details of a particular subfield. If you are the best of the best at whatever the hell it is you do, you can name your own price. People like this are doing it because they love it. They don't go out on Saturday night, they read up on case law in their field and find it truly riveting stuff, the sort to keep them up at night.

Those are the ones who get $700/hour. It really doesn't matter what area they happen to work in.

If she isn't captivated at this point (she isn't, otherwise you'd know it very clearly) the chances are that she'll do just fine in some area or another charging 75-100 and worrying more about hustling up business.

The choice of specialty depends on whether she loves it. If she is basing it off income potential then it really doesn't matter.

I cannot imagine $75 an hour. $125, but not $75.

Divorce lawyers that subspecialize in pet custody make the most.

Dickhead answer: If this thought process is part of her decision I question whether she could pass any state's bar exam.

Less dickhead answer: $700/hour is money well spent in certain areas. M&A, IP, A&D, etc. Lawyers who command those rates are very well experienced. You can't move to Baton Rouge and start charging $700/hr for insurance defense work. No one I know who is solo charges $75/hr. I've done some flat-fee side work that works out to about that but only shite I can do on a Saturday morning. It's nearly impossible to build a solo firm that does anything but crim defense (where you charge $200/hr because half your clients won't pay) or personal injury where you ball like a motherfricker if you get lucky, but mostly sift through bullshite bad clients.

I bet some PDs work for less than 75 per hour.

You get the higher end with expertise and experience. You also get it for being with a name brand firm. And $700 per hour isn't $700 profit per hour. The overhead can be heavy when you are at that rate.

I knew a FERC lawyer who could pull the high end with low overhead. She was killing it. But as someone noted, that is in a very specialized area. And usually to excel in an arcane field you have to have put in a lot time with government -- at low pay -- to get the expertise. So over your life, it averages out to about the same.

are there lawyers who charge $700/hour in Louisiana? that seems like corporate Houston rates

if any of y'all run a business and are being charged $700/hour, come hire some LC lawyers

disclaimer: i do not have a referral agreement with any corporate firm and would not receive anything of value if you did hire them. i just know some legit firms that don't charge anywhere near that much
