Are there specific traits that cause you to label a house as such?

Location? Price? Size? Specs/builder?

Where's the cutoff?

A "starter-home" should be an investment imo.

The only thing that makes something a "starter home" is the intentions of the buyer. Your starter home might be someone else's forever home.

Did it have wheels on it at one point?

Ed's paw staked us to a starter home in suburban Tempe.

size and price normally

I skipped the whole "starter home" thing though

with interest rates so low, just doesn't make sense right now

The idea is that it is affordable for you right now, but you will probably grow out of it as your family grows.

My house, which is the first one my wife and I bought, is what I would call a starter home. 847 sq ft, but in a fantastic location that we will (most likely) never leave. It's enough space right now for the two of us, and has plenty of outdoor entertaining area. But eventually we will tear it down and rebuild our (hopefully) forever home.

I'm in the market for my first home.

I want it to be a home in a good location, but it can be small because we don't have kids yet. Also, I want it to appreciate a good bit in the next 5 years so I can sell it and use the money for a bigger home designed for a bigger family.

The first one is obviously way cheaper than future ones because we don't have as much money in our 20's.

Don't do it unless you NEED to. What you envision as your forever home at the time can quickly turn into an unwanted forever bill in the future.

We won't be going crazy with it. Under 2000 sq ft. Even though I grew up in much larger homes, living in this house has helped me realize what I really need space wise to be happy.
