quote: after they lost a loved one? Like when Bama will lose Nick Saban? I guarantee you I won't be saying sorry for your loss
I agree with this

Just say "sorry for your loss, if you need anything let me know". Because there's never really the right words for that kind of situation. Just try to be a good dude and be there for your friend if he/she needs to talk about it.
Whatever you do don't throw out the "everything happens for a reason" shite.

I usually ask if they are getting anything good in the will.

"I'm there for you."
Posted on 5/14/14 at 9:03 pm to brgfather129
do you eventually drop the "for you"?
Posted on 5/14/14 at 9:04 pm to Displaced
"There" is anywhere you want me to be.

Best to say sorry for your loss and say you are there to help in any way if they need. That is enough.

I usually say "I'm sorry you're having to go through this". I'll usually tell them how much their loved one meant to me or if I'm just supporting a friend who has lost someone….how much the friend means to me. I'll usually offer to help out in any way they might need.
Having lost a brother I know there is little that I'll say that will make anything better.

Don't say "everything happens for a reason" I hate those people

I suck in these settings, so I usually clam up and mumble something that I don't even understand... I actually do pretty well when one of my loved ones dies though. I dominate small talk, and am actually a pretty likable guy during these times. Pretty weird.

I feel the same way

Tell them that you are sorry for their loss, share a memory and let them know that you are there to support them in any way that they need. Be sincere. Check in on them three weeks later to assure the support.

Sorry for your loss, I'm thinking about you and your family.
