Farm land and natural resources is my guess. Ukraine land is more valuable than anything Russia has. Also I believe Russia thinks it gains more power by doing this.

Prevent Ukraine from aligning more with western powers, and in the Russian’s mind, honor.

They get a huge buffer state, increase their oil and natural gas reserves significantly, and gain control of almost as much additional productive farmland than Russia currently contains. The Ukraine is the breadbasket of Europe, and most of the EU imports a significant amount of their foodstuff from the Ukraine (especially Germany). Once Putin establishes control over The Ukraine, he will not only have his buffer (The Ukraine is LARGER than France or any other EU country in land area), but he will have his boot planted on both Europe's food supply and fuel supply. Putin's political leverage over European affairs gets much MUCH stronger.

Remember, The Ukraine is not all Putin wants. Russia does not have a very well-functioning economy. They pretty much just grow what food they can, mine ore, make weapons, and sell energy. Adding The Ukraine gives them way more food to work with. Adding the Baltic States would give them even more energy, agriculture, several great ports, land access to Kaliningrad, and a thriving tech sector.

Ukraine is just the beginning. Putin wants all of the former Soviet Union back under one flag. He wants to right what he considers an embarrassing wrong for his country. He wants to retake it to regain their honor.

Stop making him more of a big scary threat than he is.

They're pissed that the neocons expanded NATO after promising they wouldn't.

"He wants to bring back the USSR" is what the "experts" will tell you on tv. The same experts that push the wars, the pandemic response, etc.

I'm no fan of Biden, but

quote:

Former President Donald Trump on Tuesday described Russian President Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine as “genius” and “savvy,” praising his onetime counterpart for a move that has spurred sanctions and universal condemnation from the U.S. government and its trans-Atlantic allies.

“I went in yesterday and there was a television screen, and I said, ‘This is genius.’ Putin declares a big portion of the Ukraine — of Ukraine — Putin declares it as independent. Oh, that’s wonderful,” Trump said in a radio interview with “The Clay Travis and Buck Sexton Show.” “He used the word ‘independent’ and ‘we’re gonna go out and we’re gonna go in and we’re gonna help keep peace.’ You gotta say that’s pretty savvy.”
