This is a pretty accurate description of what I've seen. It gets exhausting quickly trying to keep the person herded up.
I know it's a damn exhausting thing to attempt. If you're considering getting them help then make sure you check out your healthcare provider thoroughly. Mood stabilizers are no joke and can eliminate the enjoyment in life. It's best to keep someone slightly on the upside.

Manics are usually great fun to hang with until they crash.
Haha. This can be true but it depends on how their mania manifests itself. Some can be very aggressive

I dated a girl that was rapid cycling, meaning she cycled to mania often. It was so bad once she was laid across a big chair and it looked like she was being electrocuted with low voltage, it lasted about 24 hours.

See the Ashley Judd thread.

Paige beat me to it but what the frick are you talking about?
It doesn't work like that. You don't keep someone on the "upside" or even slightly. You balance them as best you can.
And if someone doesn't enjoy life after mood stabilizers, they need a counselor. My son enjoys his life much more than he ever did.

she had convulsions for 24 and didn't go to the doctor?
that's not normal and not a sign of bipolar disorder

If you will notice, I stated to make sure to get someone who knows what they are doing with the mood stabilizers. Yes, they are no joke.
As far as keeping someone a little up I will clarify. What I meant is not to completely level off their mood to being flat. Most of the folks I have treated with bipolar d/o (manic type) prefer to maintain some degree of their energy level. I am not talking about allowing someone to even be hypomanic.
I realize your personal experience here. I'm not discounting this. Being properly medicated is a highly individualized thing.

It can be. Everyone is different. Did the first mood stabilizer work for you?

Yeah but OCD got nothing to do with being Manic. Totally different
He's not always super obsessive, but he is also bipolar and his manic states usually manifest themselves in obsessive form. He won't sleep for days on end, he gets irritable, irrational... That's when he takes on projects like I described.
And as far as living with him, thank God I haven't since I graduated high school over 15 years ago. I feel bad for my mom when he's like that though. Truth is that he's a really good dude, one of the funniest people I've ever met...but when he hits those episodes, it's best to just get out of the way for a few days.

I've seen it up close a number of times. They will spend tons of money like it's nothing (sometimes buying like 20 of one thing at once). Some will be hypersexual where they will basically want to hump anyone and anything all the time. Good judgment goes out of the window. They get very creative and seem to have endless energy. People in hardcore midlife crisis are basically in a manic state. When a person seems to change overnight and has no regard for anyone or anything they normally care about, it's a big sign of a manic state.
In the manic depressive down state though, I've seen an extremely personable and happy person become completely dejected and unable to leave the couch or his home for about a week. They can lose interest in everything, not pay bills, feel total gloom, lose jobs, etc. Manic episodes are very difficult either way. The right med combo can really help people though (but it sometimes takes some trial and error).

You're not Bipolar, though I wouldn't rule out Borderline.

It's exhausting. I get a little manic here and there. Was actually easier to deal with 20 years ago when I was partying... I never got bored. It's a lot harder to ride out clean.
