Weren't the papers served? Why didn't they leave after the door was closed?

I didn't rewatch the entire thing, just the first 45 seconds or so to confirm it was the same one I was thinking.

That was a batshit crazy incident and justified use of lethal force, IMHO.

threads like this make me sad for some of the special members of the OT

this situation escalated long before the shooting, the detective was there to evict her but it is obvious from the video he doesnt know any of the back story because he was surprised that she reacted the way that she did. After she accused him of being fake police and slammed the door he called in a Supervisor and they talked to Li for 45 minutes through the door. She refused to come out.

quote:

“While the deputies were waiting for additional resources, an employee in the building told them the same woman threatened a maintenance worker with a knife the previous day,” Dobbs said. “The deputies attempted to communicate with (Li) for approximately 45 minutes but were unable to gain her cooperation.”

Shortly before 1:30 p.m., the personnel opened the front door to the condominium. At that point, Li allegedly stabbed the dog-handling officer, prompting the burst of law enforcement gunfire.

She had been evicted because she stopped paying rent, was threatening other tenants/staff and she refused to leave the building. She had started the process of moving out but then she stopped and that is when the condo went to court to evict her.

The previous day she had a verbal altercation with building staffers and threatened them. Police didnt know this until AFTER she shut the door on the initial detective. They definitely didnt know she was bi-polar and apparently suffering from paranoia and delusions. What they did know was she was irrational and armed and a threat to public safety. No way are they just going to leave at that point.

They gain entry and deploy less than lethal numerous times with no effect. She rushes through the hallway and lunges forward towards the officer in the kitchen. He tries to back away, stumbles, and she lands on top of him. She then stabbed the officer in the chest with the knife, you can hear him audibly gasp, and his backup had little choice. All it takes is one unlucky swing with that knife and that officer is dead on the floor.

some of the responses in this thread are too stupid for words

Next time police face a similar situation, they should swing by Yale and pick up the “perfesssers” to let them handle it

If her colleagues cared that much they should have gotten off their asses and helped her before this happened.

Back when they had Billy clubs and could use them? Yea if they could have broken her wrist with a Billy club it would have been a better ending.

Would have been stabbed a dozen times trying to hit the wrist.

Just say you would have been happier if at least 1 cop died trying to disarm her.

mean seriously a little Chinese women with a knife. I know I am an old mfer but every cop I grew up would have laughed at her and just told her to put down the knife unless you she was going to cook them dinner or something, and taken the time to de-escalate the situation and no one would have been injured, unless they got a minor cut.

Tell me you didn't watch the video without telling me. If you did, I guess you missed the thousands of times multiple cops told her to put the knife down and she did nothing but scream and retreat in her house. Then, she fricking charged and stabbed an officer that was nailing her arse with bean bags from a fricking 12 guage. So spare me the "little old Chinese lady" nonsense.

She WAS a violent and deranged human. Good shoot all the way around.

as far as the op, why are cops such pussies about knives? It's ok not to kill someone who has a knife. it is not illegal to hold a knife in the presence of cops but most of you morons don't realize that.

Guess you missed the part where she slashed one of the officers leg open after being shot with non lethal.

The 21ft rule

a person charging toward you with a knife or other sharp-edged instrument can travel 21 feet in the time it would take you to recognize that there is a threat, draw your firearm, and fire two shots.

police should not be asked to respond to mental health problems.
So your solution is to have mental health professionals conduct all evictions from now on?
Good luck with that.
Seriously, the fact that someone has a mental problem does not preclude them from presenting a danger to the people who are charged with conducting necessary duties.
Maybe there is a better answer. I really want to know how you propose handling such situations.
In this case, it might have been reasonable to maintain a perimeter and seek out other options.
But who has a mental health professional sitting around in anticipation of rushing to emergency locations?
How will this new expectation of public service function?

You do not seem to understand evictions. These vary a bit by jurisdictions but they are not normally simple notices to vacate - which is a separate process. These are normally done after other processes have failed and actual removal has become necessary. In most jurisdictions, serving the process is only the start of an eviction. The order generally requires the officer to remove the possessions and occupant - by force if necessary.
