Military for several years. Got out (regret it)

Solar energy sales while in college (great money. Loved it. Hard work)

HSE coordinator for a small plant (tons of turnover. Loved the position. Hated the company)

Back in school currently for Nursing and eventually CRNA. I still do some solar consulting for a company in Florida but I work from home. Life is good baw

Anyway, I did the “Pursue your dreamzzzz” bullshite fresh out of the military. I had worked with some great units, had a clearance. Figured I could get a CJ degree and get a 3 letter agency position no problem. Upon my green-behind-the-eared graduation... BOOM, sequester (2013-14 time frame) got a call from one of the 3 letter agencies that I had an application through for well over a year saying “hey, we’re not hiring anymore because your President sucks” not really but that’s the non PC version.

Anyway, guess what defree isn’t worth toilet paper in Louisiana? Yep, CJ. Had to reinvent myself a couple times as a result.

TL;DR version: do what’s marketable. Don’t do “what you want” because you’ll be holding your dick and running for coffee for 29k a year. Do something you can guarantee a job in.

My dream job is to have Finebaum or Moscona's job and just talk about sports all day, but that's not realistic.

Shoot.

What I do for a living is very close to that.

It didn't seem like a realistic career when I was young but next thing I know I've been doing it for over 25 years and living comfortably ( lower 6-figure income ). I love what I do and I never dread going to work. That's huge. From what I hear most people hate their job. Even the jobs that are highly lucrative.

Most people count the days until they can retire. I dread the thought that a day will come when I won't be able to do this work any longer.

You are young. Don't give up on dreams. Unless you have kids, that is. Then you're fricked and you have to be pragmatic and sensible. Kiss your dreams goodbye.

btw- what I do is in the quote above. One word.

If you think you’d like teaching I’d look into getting a master’s and teaching at a community college. I’m an accountant. If I had it to do over again I’d become a firefighter.

Firefighter/EMT (soon to be paramedic). Best job in the world. Also cut grass on the side. But a lot of firefighters do a lot of different things. Residential construction, electricians, plumbing (some real money to be made in plumbing), real estate, etc. Not to mention the benefits are comparable to any other high paying job.

I'm pretty good at getting my arse chewed and feigning concern. Military is good training for that.

If you're already contemplating burnout before being in med school... You still have residency +/- fellowship.

If you're wanting something medical. I'd give PA school a consideration

I'm a miserable SOB who made some bad career moves. Thinking about retreating into the woods and living off the land.

Civil engineer. PE. Anything related to soil as a building material. I also considered sports writer and cover the Braves. I needed money tho.
