They need to clean house at dotd and Louisiana state police.

We actually have a pretty good plan in place for evacuations. However, it is amazing to me that we have no ability to handle traffic for these large crashes. They happen at least several times a year on that bridge. There should be all sorts of built in plans that automatically get updated. This includes such things as routing traffic, getting messages out there, etc.

I know in recent times DOTD has tried to get some smart roadway stuff going - they have the traffic cams, they have some variable message signs that sometimes work, they have a website. But all in all it is pathetic.

Go take a look at Transtar in Houston. They are light years ahead of DOTD in traffic management. Yes, the traffic in Houston sucks... due to too many cars and not enough lanes at certain times of the day. But at any time you can tell what the speeds are, where the accidents are, etc.

The drivers definitely bear much of the responsibility, but the design of the bridge makes it a death trap. I've known someone who got killed because her car broke down. Another vehicle sideswiped her when she was on the "shoulder".

The vehicle speed limit is 60 and the truck speed limit is 55. The right shoulder is wider than most and the only times the road even bends is to cross the Atchafalaya.

It's the drivers.

What do all the people do that are stuck there with no food, water, etc?

I think people can survive a whole day without food and water

When I was making the drive twice daily between BR and Laffy, I always carried a gatorade bottle in my car in case there were wrecks or delays. Never know when you might have to take a wazzer.

The signs that say "Trucks Right Lane Only" and "Truck Speed 55MPH" are a complete waste. Most of the trucks do not follow those restrictions. They are actually the ones going faster and driving wreckless while passing cars up.

I disagree with this. I drive that bridge often and rarely do I see a trucker NOT following those signs.
