I don't have kids, but I would spend nothing. That said, realistically I'd go to Wal Mart and buy a shitty cake so my wife would be happy and feel like she was doing something.
Two year olds don't have birthdays. They just have a random day where other people eat cake.
ETA: It's not like they're going to remember anything about it. Four or five? Throw a party. Two? Just do any random thing and pretend to be enthused by it.

Depends... You talking party + gift?
Party wasn't so bad. My wife is a Pinterest freak so WE made almost all of the decorations and she makes pretty awsome cakes. I'm thinking food and all I was about $200 in. He got a wagon and and sand box so I'm assuming $200ish on the gift.

Make sure you get a red velvet cake. :jimgaffiganshowreference:

If you include the gift, I would guess around $200-$300. We had a party and little cookout for about 20 people.
My wife tells me the 2 year b-day was much cheaper than 1. I just put the present together, set up the tables, grill out, and don't ask questions!!

This for sure. I didn't ask or investigate because I was better off not knowing. I'm pretty sure we spend a little more than most but idgaf. They're my kids, I'm not poor, and I want them to have nice shite.

Yeah, I didn't ask last year because I figured out I was better off not knowing after the bartender showed up .. Should have kept my pie hole shut this year

Well how much did she spend?

I just had this exact argument with my wife.
I'm convinced it's not actually for the kids, but the parents.
Parents like to make it an event they'll be praised for. It makes them feel like they're better parents.
My 11 month old will sit at his first b day party while he craps his pants and has a finger knuckle deep in his nose. No fricks given.

Party place (2 hr rental) - $250
Decorations - $50
Food - $150
Gift - $25-50
Total - $475-500
Not having 30 other people in my house, their kids tearing my house down, and having to clean shite up after (plus happy wife) - PRICELESS.
While it does seem expensive for a 2yo, I do know people that spend $1000+ on parties for their kids.

If my wife spends near this much on my 10 month old's first birthday party I will go ape shite.

good luck
it all adds up pretty quick once you factor in food, gifts, party favors for other kids, jump house, etc
the only thing that I really roll my eyes at are the giant balloons. I spent $200 on just helium and had to make like 5 trips to bring all those balloons home
