Bending over a mechanical table and having it lift your arse to the ceiling so the doctor can shave your hairy arse with 4 cute interns watching wasn't exactly a perk.
But different strokes I guess.

Like others have said, the surgery sucks, really bad. Mine took a year to fully recover.

They suck and even after surgery they'll come back and you'll have to do it all again

What exactly is this type of cyst?
I have a lump next to my neck on my trap. There is no feeling just a big, hard bump. It's been there for years.

Been living with mine for 20 years. It is more of a nuisance than anything and flares up about once a year though not as bad as the initial flare up where I had to have it lanced and drained back in college. The must have ointment for anyone with this cyst is Iodex. You wont find it in your local pharmacy but can get the pharmacist to order it for you or look online. Whenever I feel mine flaring up I apply the ointment for a couple of days and the pains and swelling are gone. This simple ointment has allowed me to live comfortably and not undergo surgery.

Haven't experienced it but I've read that the smell of the puss inside it is one of the worst odors you'll ever smell.

Way too long. I had one in college. I just tried to ignore it. Ended up in the hospital for a week and almost let things get really out of hand, then I had to have the surgery after I recovered from that. I wouldn't wait.

I had one my senior year in high school. I played through it during football season but had it surgically removed after the season was over. I don't know what kind of anesthetic they gave me but the procedure didn't hurt and I was in and out during the surgery. I can remember a much older Doctor walking a young surgeon through it. When he was about to cut out the "sac' I remember the older doc saying "no, that's not it". Then I remember him saying "yeah, that's the good stuff, cut it out". The worst thing about this procedure is the first time that they take the packed gauze out of the open wound. It seemed like they just kept pulling gauze out and it would never end. I remember calling them every curse word in the book and my mom was pissed at me.

I had one as a teen and had the surgery done with a spinal block, so it didn't hurt at all during the procedure.
As the others said though, it is an open wound heal and takes awhile. Good luck.

Yes, you will need surgery and someone to place the packing in the open wound once you return home. Trust me you will feel 100 x's better. I had 2 surgeries while in college. Oh and sit in hot bath as many times a day that you can.
My surgeon told me it's possible to come back, but not where it originated. He was right because I didn't have anymore until 30 years later, about an inch away from the first one!

I got one when I was a young teenager. Had it lanced an drained. It hasn't come back in 10+ years. I don't know about the surgery, but having it lanced and drained isn't very painful (certainly far less painful than the cyst itself). The recurrence rate is fairly high, but it's less than 50%. That average rate is also skewed by the fact that people that are sedentary and obese and/or have a family history of the cyst have much higher rates of recurrence than people that don't.
Go to the doctor as soon as possible. If they recommend just having it lanced and drained, do that. Like I said, the recurrence rate is high, but as long as you don't have a family history of this problem, the odds are at least better than a coin flip that it won't come back. If, afterward, you start to feel it coming back, go to the doctor immediately and try to schedule the surgery.

The surgery isn't as bad as some people have said and neither is the pain afterward, HOWEVER........
Read this and remember it as the absolute most important part of the post OP process. If you're trying to decide whether to change the bandage or wait a little while longer, CHANGE THE BANDAGE. And keep it moist. The pain of having to pull out gauze that has attached itself to your healing second a-hole is something I only wish upon the worst of people.
