Maybe that's the issue... there really isn't a bunch of guys that actually own businesses on here, just guys that act like they do.

You might want to start by fleshing out a solid business plan with clearcut objectives and milestones.

You need to have a multiple member LLC to protect you. If you're a single member LLC the courts may let the LLC shield be penetrated and you will loose your protection.

Read The E-Myth before you get started. My wife and I read a lot of books before starting our business, and this one had more useful information than any of the others.

Second best book was The Success Principles.

my dad got out of the business 30 years ago and decided to become a 3PL instead. He owned tons of trucks and trailers. It took one wreck that shut down the interstate in Bama on labor day weekend and 10 year lawsuit for him to sell all the trucks and trailers and go into 3PL

With today's industry and regulations and insurance prices, its a uphill battle

I would love to start my own trucking company as well

1) Have a thourough business plan and exit strategy before you open your doors
2) Be prepared to work 24/7
3) Manage your cash flow as efficiently as possible

This line sums up starting a business: "Just because Bob is the best bicycle builder in town doesn't mean he should run a bicycle business."

If you haven't done so, take a few accounting courses.

I think we found the board's resident IRS Agent.

(Kidding - Good advice)

I had serious sticker shock the first time I had to pay self employment taxes, so the OP will want to consider that.

You need to go the following:

Form your company, LLC is generally good. File w/ SOS

Get actax ID number

Get necessary licenses

Get necessary insurance lined up

Find a suitable location for your business

Find necessary employees especially to do your books.

Investigate the best way to keep your costs down without hurting service or performance.

Secure business through contacts, etc. Get on bid lists. Broadcast your new company via every means feasible. Let people in the business know you are on your own.

Good luck, be prepared to lose money initially, and hope your judgment is sound and you've made good decisions.
