What are some common corporate euphemisms used at your office?

As much as we common folk detest this sort of thing, we're all guilty of using it.

"Empowering" = I'm your master and above your pay grade but I'm going to give you some work to make you feel important.

"Cascade" = Funnel this communication down through your teams so it looks like it came from you and not from me, and I don't look like an a-hole.

"Headwinds" = bad market signs that point to potential layoffs.

"I'll nudge Bill on this" = Bill is slow and hasn't responded to my request.

My favorites:

"There's some opportunity here" (a common one management used at Home Depot) = This process/person sucks arse but we have no idea how to fix or improve it.

"Per my previous note..." = You're a schmuck who can't read.

My day to day is a permanent existence in corporate buzzword Bingo hell.

I make a serious effort to avoid using any of it.

My favorite one is synergies, although it seems to have fallen out of favor in 2023.

Starting an email with “Team”.

And a lot of people have started saying “reach out to” instead of call or talk to.

Both of those irritate me.

I was at a symposium this past Saturday and a woman used the term "springboard" a few times when she was needlessly bloviating about shite already covered by others. "Circle back" and "piggyback" are a couple others that irritate me.

I cut that shite out of everything. I'll say good morning or good afternoon, or hello. That's it.

Because they aren't going to call. They are going to either email them or instant message them. They don't want to actually solve the problem, they just want to make sure they can say they're waiting on someone else.

A new one to me I keep hearing this year is "sausage making," meaning the details of some topic.

I'm fine with the euphemisms. The acronyms are what drives me crazy. I swear engineers use them because it makes them feel important, not because it saves some breath. If you have to explain what every acronym you use means then stop using them.

What really peeves me is when they write an email full of acronyms and after each one they have an explanation of what it means in parentheses. IYKYK (if you know you know)

Reach out just sounds pretentious as hell. Just say email or call them.

Whenever I hear these fake buzzwords I start daydreaming of being on a beach... drink in hand under an umbrella watching full bosomed women in bikinis running around...
These buzzwords just shut me down and I lose interest in the BS...
The word "Team" means 2 things.. 1) I am about to lay some heavy BS on you.. 2) Help me out I royally screwed up and I am throwing it in your lap...

“Make you whole”. It’s usually what we tell our GCs and their subs before we slash their change orders they submitted into pieces.
