VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) — Canadian authorities say there have been multiple fatalities after a whale watching boat with 27 people on board sank off Vancouver Island.

The Joint Rescue Coordination Centre confirmed that the vessel made a mayday call shortly before 4 p.m. Sunday near Tofino, British Columbia.

The B.C. Coroner’s Service said more than one person died.

Asked how many were dead, British Columbia Coroner spokeswoman Barb McLintock said in an email: “Multiple but we don’t yet have a firm number. Still a very fluid situation so we really are not sure yet.”

Holy shite.

Wow. How does a boat like that sink faster than a rescue crew can get out there? The places that they go for whale watching generally aren't very far away from the shore... at least when I went on a whale watching tour.

ETA: I guess it could have been one of the smaller inflatable ones likes this

We have a whale watching boat. Usually more than one vessel around, as the boats congregate in the same areas. Could have capsized which would cause immediate casualties.

Why would the whale just watch the boat sink?

Did someone forget to put the plug in the boat? Can't understand what made it sink. No info.

True. The waters are typically pretty calm in that area though, aren't they?

At first I was hoping it was a Whale Wars boat. But this is tragic.

Very. Could be they hit a rock at and pushed everyone to one side of the vessel. Our boat is a 48 pax catamaran and the only way it would take those kind of casualties is if it flipped.

One of my sons goes out on those boats pretty often, fortunately I know he was up in the mountains today.
