You have absolutely no clue, sir. The reality is quite the opposite of your supposition. Causation of the traffic problem is exacerbated by 2 facts: 1. The southern part of West Baton Rouge Parish, and a portion of Iberville Parish, are in effect an island bordered by the Mississippi River, Bayou Plaquemine and the Intra-Coastal Waterway. There are exactly 3 (!) bridges across these navigable waters - of which only one outlet goes north. 2. The schools, land affordability & housing, make this area near Baton Rouge one of the most attractive and affordable places to live. The population increase in the past 5 years have exacerbated the traffic problems of the constrictions identified in #1.

BOOM!!! Remember when the Intercoastal Bridge in Gross Tete was out... then the one in Brusly at the locks formed a hole in it and they shut down half of it..... Several people were stuck. A ridiculous situation...

I'd guess 95% of the truck traffic on that bridge is going from WBR to Livingston on I-12, not to New Orleans, so a southern loop will have a minimal impact on the truck traffic on that bridge. I keep saying it like a broken record - Baton Rouge needs a bypass just like Birmingham's I459, not a loop.

As I've posted before about the BR loop, its going to take the governor taking a leadership role in this and him twisting some arms in the parishes effected.

Yep. Bobby Jindal was the perfect governor to do this as he has quite a shite ton of political muscle consolidated for himself in this state and always goes for the throat against his enemies. He's basically a republican version of Huey Long.

well no one apparently wanted the Audubon Bridge in New Roads so they put it there. Not saying it wan't needed, but sure woulda been nice to have it south of the NMRB.

Have you been out to that bridge lately? Have you seen the traffic volumes? There is virtually none.

OR....

A four lane through-way Flyover from Livingston to West Baton Rouge Parish right North of the present I-12/I-10 corridor. Build it up high above the present roadway. Zero or only one or two local interchanges from before Denham Springs to past Port Allen. Make it a Toll road, through traffic will pay for it.

The shortest distance between two points is.....?

he could have got in done in his first term but now he would probably hurt the project. hopefully the next gov will throw his/her weight behind the project.

still amazed the "need" for one there took precedence over one b/w the HW (new bridge lol) and Sunshine bridge

Why are parishes on board with this but not the loop?

This is the southern loop Ascension and Iberville didn't want.

Ascension wanted the bridge, but "the loop" was a toll road with an unprecedentedly wide right of way, that was proposed in order in conjunction to new zoning that would simultaneously de-value residential property, allow the property to be imminent domain-ed on the cheap, have the toll road built while controlling where all of the on-ramps, off-ramps, and overpasses go, and then selling the remaining "right of way" back to developers at rock bottom prices, just in time for the land to be re-zoned as dense commercial/mixed use residential property. The developers make a ton, the old families lose their homes and homesteads, and the loop swings so far south that no one uses it.

However, a Southern loop is needed, but many of the proposed routes were simply massive land snatching schemes.

Would do nothing to get trucks off i12

But it would get them off of I-10, which is a start

I agree, but better something than nothing.

If a chick offered you a BJ to ease the tension, but not the whole shebang, would you take it?

Maybe they can upgrade 190 B/W Port Allen and Opelousas to make that more of an option for trucks also. But I like your idea.

Hitler had the autobahn built. Say what you will of dictators, they do get roads built.

Not that I'm a fan.

It would take at least five years to complete any sort of loop/ bridge project once it started. Think of how shitty the problem will be 5 to 10 years from now.
So we should probably not do it then.

You cant really build completely elevated expressways anymore. They fell out of favor because they supposedly destroy neighborhoods.

Anything they build will have to be at grade except for interchanges obviously.

I don't care if its a tunnel just build something. If it started around Livingston and connected back to 10 west of Port Allen it would be a huge help.

Not to derail this thread with worthless what ifs but he wouldn't risk the bad press by reversing course.

If its David Vitter, I'm not so optimistic as that guy only thinks about himself and his political career.

However, it's clear it's going to take a ruthless executive to get all the parishes and parish presidents in line to secure the future of South Louisiana as that's where the money is in this state. We just cannot come together for a consolidated agreement voluntarily.

Yes, he was corrupt and a POS but he got shite done with a lot of projects we still use today.

I think the best plan would be a northern loop that goes from around Denham to meet up with Airline near Plank Road. At that point, Airline is a controlled Access highway all the way until 190 crosses the Old Bridge. From then on, you just build a span to connect 190 to I-10 right past Lobdell.

On the Southern end, create the Westbank Expressway along Highway 1, then 4 lane with turn lanes Highways 30, 73, 74, and 70 through Ascension and Iberville Parishes and put a new bridge in St. Gabriel where 74 hits River Road, then add I-10 interchanges at 74 and Bluff Road.

In one of the flattest states, if not the flattest? With questionable soil gradient and eroding coastline?

Seriously, I'm impressed with how Texas DOT gets shite cracking with their infrastructure faster than you can say banana split. With two states next to each other, it's unbelievable what the differences are in complacency and urgency compared to each other. It's like night and day.
