they just want to be outraged over clickbait bs, let them, its pretty funny
The best part is half the replies are quotes from the article saying the headline is intentionally misleading, but the other half are guys pissed off about something that didn't happen how they are picturing it.

They are dropping "Duty, Honor, Country" from the Mission Statement (it was only added to it in 1998). Duty, Honor, Country is remaining the Motto.
So...the motto dates back to 1898, but it was 100 years later when it was added to the Mission Statement...and now, 25 years later, it has been dropped from said statement.
Personally, I don't know why you would drop the motto...just read George MacArthur's speech from 1962, when he addressed the Corps and emphasized the motto's significance, and you will understand why it embodies what West Point is all about.

Until they are done away with as well. Have the statues taught you nothing?

Are you suggesting what constitutes "Army Values" couldn't be changed by the pen stroke of some high up functionary?

Sure.
I mean, they are telling you what it means, but if you want to get mad at future possibilities, go ahead, I guess.

“Duty, Honor, Country” is not less changeable than what constitutes “Army Values”. I’m not sure why this is an issue.

The issue is "Duty, Honor, Country" is front and center in the American public's mind when they think of West Point. Those are bedrock virtues.
When you change it to "Army Values" that has to be explained with another poster or PowerPoint slide, you might as well be reading the terms and conditions of your cell phone contract. And you know damn well what the impetus for all this is. Much like those cellphone contracts and insurance policies, "terms are subject to change".

So it’s been in the mission statement for 25 years. I say that’s tradition. And since I have a child at West Point I can tell you they aren’t happy about it either.

Leftists take over in stages. One step at a time. They start with the children and then play the long game. The long game is now coming to fruition after about a 70 year march through major institutions.

Yup. Usually inoffensive at first.
"Oh you are being ridiculous, what's wrong with 'Army Values'? It will still be around the academy. We just want to update the motto..."
They'll make you out to be some ridiculous radical bigot.
Then...

What's even sadder is no one is willing to read the article before they bitch on a message board.
It is particularly frustrating when posters correct the errors in the OP but some people continue to bitch about the misleading OP.

A sad day. Many will rightly weep at it.
quote:
No human being could fail to be deeply moved by such a tribute as this, coming from a profession I have served so long and a people I have loved so well. It fills me with an emotion I cannot express. But this award is not intended primarily for a personality, but to symbolize a great moral code – the code of conduct and chivalry of those who guard this beloved land of culture and ancient descent. That is the meaning of this medallion. For all eyes and for all time, it is an expression of the ethics of the American soldier. That I should be integrated in this way with so noble an ideal arouses a sense of pride and yet of humility which will be with me always.
Duty, Honor, Country: Those three hallowed words reverently dictate what you ought to be, what you can be, what you will be. They are your rallying points: to build courage when courage seems to fail; to regain faith when there seems to be little cause for faith; to create hope when hope becomes forlorn. Unhappily, I possess neither that eloquence of diction, that poetry of imagination, nor that brilliance of metaphor to tell you all that they mean.
-Douglas MacArthur

They're subtly changing it to "Doody on our country"

Could mean anything.
It could except in this case it means:
quote:
Many people know what the words Loyalty, Duty, Respect, Selfless Service, Honor, Integrity, and Personal Courage mean.
So essentially the Supe added Respect, Selfless Service, Integrity, and Personal Courage to go along with Duty and Honor.
If this would have happened when Trump was in office it wouldn't be news. When I read the headline my first reaction what the hell are they talking about because Duty, Honor, Country isn't part of USMA's Mission Statement. Then I read the article and saw it was added in 1998.
It wasn't news then and it isn't news now as far as I'm concerned. Now if they start removing those three hallowed words from every building, the Alma Mater, and quit memorizing MacArthur's Duty, Honor, Country speech. Then we have problems.

I just texted grad school buddy about this who is a West Point grad with two tours in Afghanistan.
His response: "It's nothing, people trying to make something out of nothing".
