If cancer is a mutation of cells and evolution is just a series of random mutations, then shouldn't we be glad so many people are getting cancer as that means we're evolving? I mean surely sooner or later we'll find a form of cancer that's beneficial... right?

I feel like we've had this conversation before about why you thinking this is a gotcha is stupid.

A common misconception about life expectancy is that we are living longer than previous generations, we are not, the average is increased because fewer people are dying early in their life. We have decreased infant mortality

Plus women don't die so much in childbirth. But I still think people live longer on average.

Oh I know. As well as anyone here and better than most.

And I spelled it out the last time you made the argument.

Main reason why I refrained was because this isn't an evolution thread.....but what the hell, pull out the cliff notes:

Your fallacy is that you equate cancer with mutation. It's not. It may be an example of a deleterious mutation but it's not the de facto result of one. You go further as to insinuate that mutations haven't yet been shown to generate a positive effect.

When in reality the list of confirmed positive mutations is quite long.

One recent that that hit major headlines was a mutation that allowed them to turn someone with full blown AIDS to an HIV negative status, the first time it has ever happened.

Not sure what you're talking about. I don't know who you are nor do I remember ever making this or any argument with you.

What difference does it really make when you'll be dead.

Eh.

Might have confused you with someone else on that particular one.

I do remember you being critical at best though, and this wouldn't be the first time you have made scorning/joking statements like that.

So apologies if it is really unwarranted.

Somewhere I read that they are backing away from this HIV cured statement.

A common misconception about life expectancy is that we are living longer than previous generations, we are not, the average is increased because fewer people are dying early in their life. We have decreased infant mortality, and created prevention and treatment measures for 5 or 6 major diseases that at the turn of the century were pretty much fatal. In the late 1800s those that survived the first year of life and avoided contracting smallpox, polio, etc, had a good chance of living as long as they would today.

Ok. So what? We have the same life expectancy as previous generations. And they're all dead or dying. What's it got to do with the OP? His bro thinks we will all die of cancer. My point is that we all die. Of something. Might as well not worry about it and enjoy each day you get. Monty Python had a song about this that summed it up pretty well.

I actually thought about this...my phone spends 20+ hours per day either on the side of my head or an inch from my scrote...always sending and receiving little pings of data...

can't be good at all..
