I'm thinking about growing some tomatoes indoors this winter. Can anybody direct me to a good source for the basics?

And no, not weed. I wouldn't have a clue where to get the seeds.

i'd go with website. way more convenient, and you could always print a few pages for free if you needed a hard copy.

hydro or in the ground?

I have been growing tomato and peppers for a few years and making my own hydro nutes.

There is a learning curve and getting the right tools, but i fyou can automate enough of it, it is a fun hobby

For winter, the peppers and tomatoes didnt really make over the winter, but lettuce, broccoli and such do prettty good

Hydro? Can't I just use some dirt? Or wouldn't that work?

Thanks. I do , but preliminarily I was thinking a pot, some dirt, some seeds, and some grow lights. Is that not enough? Oh, and water.

Line the inside of your attic with reflective material (foil) or else the helos will spot the heat via infrared .

Still not going to explain the spike in your electricity bill relative to your neighbors so take it easy with the lights...

Good luck.

Use fox farm ocean forest soil.

Use at least 600a mh/hps lighting.

Fox farm has good nutes too, in tiger bloom, grow big and big bloom. Beastie blooms and cha ching are good too.

Water with about 6.2 ph.

Yes....but....
a) you need nutrients
b) growing in soil provides better flavor. But it takes longer
c) hydro is a bitch to set up and maintain but yields are ridiculous
d) you have to worry about cooling. Lights get hot. Invest in LEDs if you are planning on growing frequently. More expensive but cooler and use less power
e) pests are a bitch and a half.

I am growing "tomatoes" outside right now. Its really easy to do, and cheap as frick. I will probably spend around $50 for the entire set up, and yield about 3 ounces of "pre 98 bubba kush tomatoes"

I assumed led lights take care of the heat issue.

I guess I don't want to waste time and wait a long time, so I guess I need to look at hydroponics. shite. Don't need another time-suck hobby but we'll see. I assume once you get into all that shite a book or website recommendation is not necessary. The local shop will supply. I'm pretty sure there is one nearby.

Doubt o.p. knows about soil much less hydro. PH levels in hydro are different and nute levels combined etc.

LED doesnt seem to have the nugget building power of a hortilux hps. And if LED breaks its a bitch.

I'd go T5 over led.

I am sure there is. And they can help. This is what I used to use for help but growing outside is much easier than indoor. Well maybe not easier, but less things to set up. You have additional pests, weather and smell to deal with.

No idea if its relevant. I also have the marijuana growing bible but again I am outdoors. So its different.

Yes, but it eliminates the heat issue and is cheaper over the long run. This is why all the dispensaries are switching to LED. I know quite a few personal growers and many of them are switching.

Honestly you can use fluorescent combined with a window. I got about 2 ounces out of that grow. Not the quality of HPS or LED, but dead easy and cheap.
