The History department head at the United States Military Academy claims it was...

LINK

This saddens me to see the great institution of USMA espousing this garbage. The campaign of white guilt has now reached the point of invading one of America's oldest and most sacred bastions of higher education and gateway to the Officer Corps.

It was about a lot of things.

Slavery was the largest, if it was removed it would have destroyed the southern economy and likely the entire country's economy.

whether or not slavery was 'THE' issue for the civil war, the link is sophomoric, inaccurate, and simplistic as are most on that site.

Well the rednecks in the south say it wasn't, and who do you think knows better? That's right, move along USMA.

Don't ever go to that board so my apologies. This will be more informed and lighthearted so it's separate but equal.

Yes it was. The spread of slavery was the root cause.

The Missouri Compromise set the war in motion forty years before Fort Sumter.

Anyone arguing against free labor and maintaining that in the South is just wrong.

Cool thing about a civil war is no matter what you win, assuming the country stays intact
