Was Phil Robertson's punishment responsible for DD's declining ratings?

Or is it viewer backlash in response to his comments? Or are people becoming bored of the show?

Wednesday's Duck Dynasty averaged 4.7 million viewers, the first time in over a year that the series has fallen below the 5-million mark. The new low comes on the heels of a fatigued season for the A&E juggernaut. It returned to 8.5 million viewers in January -- steadily dropping ever since.

They're over exposed now. The novelty has worn off.

This. It's a one note meme, and it wasn't going to go on for much longer. The flap may have even staved off the decline for a bit.

The show got away from what got them there.
They should go back to the first couple of seasons and learn. You don't need to fix what isn't broken.

ETA: They should read TD too.

I don't think so. The show has been white-hot and there's no way any show is going to keep that up. It has nothing to do with whatever it was that Phil said or did.
Compared to other shows in its genre it is still experiencing stellar ratings.
There is a faction that would LOVE to see the downfall of this show and they have a VERY loud voice and a willing platform for their voice.

Probably this but I'd be curious to see some stats on the network's promotion of the show before and after the "controversy." It seems like I used to see DD promos all the time ... Damn near every commercial break ... now not so much. I wonder if they OK'ed his return to the show but scaled back their promotion?

this is true. even if this was the show's peak, it would have been viewed as a major success.

I loved the show but stopped watching because it has gotten repetitive and Si is just annoying now.

Like every hit reality show, the producers try to make it better each season to keep interest. In doing so they stage, and script things which only makes it predictable and viewers aren't as dumb as producers think they are.

Willie shouldn't have started hanging around politicians and cable news pundits, and should have immediately shot down rumors he was thinking about running for Congress instead of letting them float around like he was actually considering it, which he may have been.

Phil should have kept the interviews light and avoided current events.

Those guys are entitled to their beliefs, but doing what they were doing is a sign they were starting to believe their own hype and take themselves seriously. When you do that you're risking your brand longevity. You can be an entertainer or a political/social figure. The ones who can successfully be both at the same time are very rare exceptions.

No, his belief that he can say what he wants without repercussion is what started the decline, not the punishment

The Phil interview hurts on multiple levels. The true core say frick A&E for suspending him, so they lost interest. The show was already pushing away the base with rumors of not wanting to end in a prayer. Then they suspend him for quoting the Bible. Also those who are offended by what the Bible says are going to quit watching. Only 10% of the population is gay but 50% has a gay relative or friend. Gay bashing is just not going to fly with 1/2 the population. Lastly people are repelled by negativity. Once their was a negative issue associated with the show many people just do not want to associate with that.

The numbers haven't fallen a lot, they're just comparing it to the season opener's numbers which they weren't ever going to stay at. Same thing happened with John and Kate's divorce episode.
