If it's light primed it will be easier to sand and respray. If it's a heavy coat of paint you may be better recoating with a light coat of mud, then texturing.

I have the orange peel gun from HD. I mix my mud to a milk shake consistency. When I start to spray I keep a consistent distance from the wall or ceiling and walk the gun leaving it spraying flat. Do long passes without pauses. I don't do overlaps. After the 1st light coat I do another coat (if first horizontal then the 2nd is vertical). Again long passes keeping the gun flat.

Don't pause and keep your arms moving when you stop the spray or you may get a clump.

Edit: have the gun moving before you begin and after you stop similar to spray painting if that helps.

The only purpose of orange peel texture is to hide a crappy float and sand job.
Do it right and you won't need to waste your time and money on texture.

You'll never get it to match anyway.
