VW's Apology: $1,000 to affected owners

Volkswagen of America will offer $500 to owners of 2.0-liter diesel vehicles with illegal emissions test-rigging software, part of a “goodwill” package aimed at calming customers affected by the company’s deception.
The $500 will come on a prepaid Visa card and can be used wherever Visa is accepted, VW said in a statement. As part of the package, affected owners will also receive a second prepaid card worth $500 that can be redeemed at VW dealerships, and three years of 24-hour roadside assistance.

frick that.
If VW just tanked the resale value of my car by cheating emissions standards they can shove 500 dollars up their arse and I'd see them in court.
This is like the Carnival cruise that went to shite in the gulf and the compensation was a discount on a future carnival cruise.

As some posters and VW owners have mentioned this could hurt resale without the corrections made, will this $1000 cover those costs
ETA It appears not.

That ain't quite gonna make up for my car being effectively worthless.
ETA: I had to laugh when I got an apology letter from them and right under it was my note for that month.
Where this gets hairy in my mind is when it breaks out of warranty. I can't trade it in unless I take a massive loss on it. I'm just stuck with it. Who's gonna pay for that failure that I'm forced to live with because I can't sell it before it fails?

I'll buy both of y'alls VWs for $1500 each... since you agree they are worthless.

Why does this hurt value? Nobody gives a shite about emissions

How does this hurt your resale value? If anything it should help it. You do not have to get the recall done in the cars. If you bring it to the dealership just tell them you don't want it. I've talked to some of the guys at Southpoint and that is what was explained to me.

This. I assume though perception of something "wrong with the car".

If they'd double my warranty, I'd be content with that. I was going to keep the car regardless.

Dealerships won't touch them right now becuase they feel like they won't be able to sell them.
The recall will be mandatory one it is all lined out. The dealership told me they are hearing Q3 2016 before a solution is finalized. My car will be well over 100k miles by then, so I'm curious about how they'll handle me.
Fortunately for me, I like my car and have no intention of selling it. It's perfect for what I need it for. I do feel bad for those who want to get rid of theirs though. They'll never get close to what it was worth before the scandal was announced.
I'm pretty torn on how I feel about this $500 visa. I personally don't feel like Volkswagen owes me any money at this point.

Also, it says acceptance of the goodwill package does not release your claims against VW. So why the hell not? I signed up.

The FEMA handouts during Katrina were better than this.

No kidding. I'm shopping for a VW for one of my family members and I'm not seeing these VWs worth nothing.

Here's the email I sent out earlier to several VW email addresses. It probably won't be read, but I guess there's a chance:
Hello,
I just signed up for my "goodwill" package. While I feel it should be in the $2 - $3k range, it's a step in the right direction. I wanted to make a suggestion, especially if your end goal is to get the vehicles back to the dealership when the fix is implemented:
1. Extend the vehicle warranty. From the moment the fix is implemented, you should give customers piece of mind that if reliability suffers, VW will have our backs. We will effectively be test subjects carrying out long term road testing for you guys.
2. Cover routine maintenance for 2 years. The cost is high to maintain the TDI, especially with the DSG, and we payed a premium to be able to do so. This will also give you guys an opportunity to get people into the dealerships and provide feedback on the performance of the vehicle and new software.
3. Give a hefty voucher for current owners to either buy another VW down the road or trade in their current TDI. We should be afforded the opportunity to buy our next VW well below market value. It will carry some of your losses into the future, lowering the economic burden on your company in the short term.
Of course all of this can be offered in a way that releases VW from further claims of litigation. I'm sure if you guys explained yourselves, and how an attorney would get most of the money of a class action lawsuit, everyone would win and your company name could start rebuilding with your current owners. I'd rather not make attorneys wealthy over doing little to nothing.
I hope you guys read this and give this serious consideration, or at least something along these lines. I'd much rather drive my car, and feel good doing so, as I do enjoy it. I just want piece of mind that reliability and maintenance costs aren't going to break the bank once the fix is in. If you guys do so, I'll remain a loyal customer in the future.
Thank you.

It is goodwill.
You aren't waiving your rights by accepting it.
