Taking a family trip up there to visit relatives in Alexandria area during Mardi Gras week and driving over to Blacksburg to check out the campus. Any OT opinions on it? Tuition is not bad for $37,000 a year compared to some of these other schools. Wondering how much scholarships they give too as well. TIA

Heard the Hokie Stone was beautiful. Is it respected as a top education? Don't know much about it

I've been there for a few football games (VT vs OhioST). Campus is pretty cool and all the bars are pretty much "on campus" unlike LSU. Not much in the town besides that.

I think you may know the answer already.

My advice would be to stop looking at the overall ratings of a school and checkout the rating for your child's particular major.
I've heard VT is a very good school overall though

Beautiful campus but Blacksburg is pretty lame for college town.
Best on campus food you can get though.

For that price you could send him to Tulane, or any other private school.
If he wants to get a technical degree there are cheaper options.

This. Nowadays major outweighs school name.

37k?
If I were going to spend that kind of cheddar on a non-elite school I'd be looking at Florida schools or ASU/U of A.
Everyone I know who went to VT loved it though, one of the most loyal/fervent alumni bases I've seen.

Why would anyone pay 37k to go to VT? Academics are not worth it at all just stay in state or go to a cheaper state school. UVA I could see 37k but not VT.

think texas a&m east. one of the best engineering programs on the east coast. corps of cadets and civilian student population. rural location. belongs in the sec.

I wouldn't pay 37k tuition to go to A&M either.

personally, i don't think any state school is worth oos tuition for an undergraduate education.

Blacksburg is a pretty boring college town, but it's beautiful April-October. November-March is pretty miserable looking. A lot of people call it Bleaksburg during those months.

This. If they really insist on it, spend a year in that state getting residency and reapply for in state tuition. It's worth the tens of thousands saved.
