Do any of you have any idea how to transfer a title from Texas to Louisiana on a vehicle that isn't registered with a license plate in either state?

Get a notarized bill of sale and notarized title at any notary. You’ll need both parties present.

Getting the tags in LA comes after that when you go to actually transfer the title and register it in LA. You’ll pay taxes and fees then.

Getting something notarized happens at a notary, apparently.

Point was you need both documents notarized. I’ve been turned away at LA DMV before with only a notarized bill of sale.

You don't need a notary when buying from an individual in texas...

You need sogmed title. Signed bill of sale. Copy of their driver's license.

Take that to dmv in louisiana. Pay taxes and title fees. Get handed plate.

Eta: louisiana requires a notary for in state purchases. For out of state, they adhere to the rules of the orogin state of the vehicle

This hasn’t been my experience. Get both a notarized bill of sale and notarized title.

If you do not have a copy of their DL and two signed docs, only then do you need anything notarized docs to transfer in from TX or MS.

The law is quite clear.

My last few vehicles have been purchased out of state, cash, private sale.

Never once have I jeeded a notary for TX or MS titled vehicles.

I use those third party DMV places for everything now. I'll gladly pay the extra fee and save time not dealing with government employees. They typically have notaries in house if you need one.

If that happened, then the that DMV location was mistaken.

You need a notarized bill of sale, and the title must be signed by both parties in the correct spots on the title. That's it.

In the last three months, I've bought motorcycles in both Mississippi and Illinois and a utility trailer in California, and the only thing I had notarized were the bills of sale. The notary doesn't stamp the actual title.

This is excellent advice. Makes things so much easier.

This is what i would have for your situation.
Bill of Sale
Texas Title with the back signed & dated by the owner.
Odometer Statement
If buying from an individual, i'm pretty sure you'll need a Affidavit of Residency for the seller.

Since you want to be a smart arse let me tell you. “At a notary?” No. In the presence of, yes. They are mobile.

But what he was referring to was both parties other than the notary .

I'm not going to belabor the point with you. MY experience is they can and will turn you away without the notarized title.

And yes, I have purchased numerous movables from TX, OK, MS, and AL.

You.

Not me.

Because I'm aware of the state law as well as reciprocity agreements.
