While dumb, I respect the fact that they put their money where their mouth is. Many institutions would try to keep the funding while changing the name.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't suspect they were the ones who forced the money issue.

Update: DAR responds.."forced to take money"

The Tennessee chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy said Tuesday that it had no legal choice but to accept $1.2 million from Vanderbilt University in exchange for relinquishing the naming rights to the private school’s Confederate Memorial Hall.

The Southern heritage organization “is disappointed that an institution such as Vanderbilt University would attempt to whitewash, sanitize and rewrite American history,” the group said in a statement.

This is one of the more faux outrage-gy stories about the removal of Confederate symbolism.

Look, I cringe whenever a Confederate memorial is removed 99% of the time. However, this is not one of those times.

When this building went up, it wasn't even part of Vanderbilt. They merged in the 70s. The building itself isn't tangibly connected to the Civil War at all. The UDC gets a very nice check that they can use for their advocacy efforts...it'd pay a few scholarships for Confederate descendants if they want. The word "Confederate", which 99.9% of us didn't even know was there, hasn't even been used when referring to this building for 10 years.

In other words, this one isn't a huge deal.
