If the parking is free and valet works for tips only, how much should you tip?

$5 is a lot. $2-3 is good. I am a former valet. $5 is a nice gesture. A $20 when you park means I put your car on the curb up front.

Just flash him. I'll sure he'll be fine with that.

Do you tip when you hand over the car and then when you pick it up?

I normally do, 2 bucks both ways.

What is the proper protocol.

I usually give them $20 when I park up front and keep the keys because of the contents of my vehicle. It's not that I don't trust them, it's that I don't want them to be liable for anything to happen to my vehicle or it's contents. Often times I'll show them my table and tell them to come get me if they need to move the vehicle.

Oh, and another $10-20 when I leave.

I only valet a few times a year and when I do go, it's at fine dining restaurants or work related.

It's not like I can't afford it.
