What happens if the bus is late?

STANSBURY PARK, Utah -- A high school is fining students if they arrive to class late.
Students at Stansbury High School in Utah will receive a warning if they are consistently late to class. After the warning, the student will receive a $3 fine. If the tardiness continues, the fee goes up to $5.
quote:
If students are unable to pay their fines they have an option to take a lunch detention or show a clean tardy attendance for a few weeks.
School administrators said the money collected from the fines will go towards a fund for student incentives.

Given that it only kicks in if the student is consistently late, probably nothing.

While teaching children that mommy and daddy can buy their way out of punishment reflects reality, I'm not sure it sends the right message.

Looks good to me. Maybe a financial cost will make kids realize that timeliness matters

Bus? You mean horse and buggy?

I think one of Malcolm Gladwell's books showed this initially works but then would create even more tardiness because the fee is nominal. There was an example used where people charged for being late to pick up their kids from daycare actually increased the rate at which people were late.

Sure, for the few that will actually be spending money they earned. The majority will just be asking mom for a fiver and avoiding any real consequence. Just sounds like fund raising at the expense of discipline to me.

Wish my job would do this. These jokers are 5 min late everyday

Ok then. This is a non-issue.

Not sure why they give you an option to buy your way out, we went to after school detention for repeated tardiness.

I don't have an issue with this.
You think most kids are really going to want to have that conversation with their parents?
"Mom/Dad, can I have 5 bucks?"
"Why do you need 5 bucks?"
"To pay my fine for being late to school"

It would appear that just about the only places that are anal retentive about being 5 minutes late are high schools and possibly low skill labor jobs.

A lunch detention?
You mean I get to eat in privacy and silence?

This is sort of true. I pay for aftercare for my child after school...it is considered after care at 3:40 pm and I can't get there until 3:45-3:50, so I'm stuck paying for aftercare. Aftercare, in the past, was considered not to start until 4:00. For whatever reason they changed it, I'm stuck paying for it now. I take my time getting there now since I'm paying for it anyways. So if I leave the office later, or want to stop by the store before I get my child....now I do.

It's good that they there is punishment. Fines, however, are not a good idea IMO if it is a public school. Given the low amount, it's not the worst thing either. Would rather see some form of detention, suspension, corporal punishment or other punishment.

I think the reason for the low amount is to avoid just that.
Most HS kids can afford that, although it hits on the play money.
Any kid who immediately goes to their parent to get it fixed and they don't reprimand/refuse...odds are that particular kid is a lost cause anyway.

If I got a 5$ fine every day for being late in high school, I'd still be in debt now, 15 years later.
