You are exactly right in saying BASF had one of their best contracts ever actually. The USW on the other hand didn't get much of what they wanted. My source is the USW chairman for BASF.

Just fire them all like Reagen did the air traffic controllers.

Can a company or politician truthfully say there's a shortage of workers once they complain that they demanded more money??

Is that not how it works?

Depends. That's a pretty general statement. What time of year? What sector? By location? By area? The same company could have different answers depending

Well, yeah. If the labor supply weren't somewhat short, the strike would not be a valid negotiation tactic. If there wasn't a shortage of labor, the overwhelming supply of people who want the jobs and could competently do the job would just go and take the strikers' jobs.

I understand negotiations. Been through four since I started working in my current job. Two of those were with USW as our affiliation. I can honestly say that we had better contracts when we were affiliated with anyone other than them

Not at all impressed with the USW. Y'all currently represented by USW or someone else?

I'm a union member at a local refinery..... I would be happy with 4.5% annual raises and a $4k signing bonus.

While I agree with you on the frick union part, you have to understand that most of these workers don't want this to happen. Most took what jobs they could get and had no choice but to be a union member. I work at a non union plant, but applied at many plants, some union. If I would have received a job offer only from one of them I would have taken it to better my family's financial situation. So yes, frick unions. But blame the national union heads. Don't wish job loss on most of the workers. Most of them want nothing more than to walk into work as normal tomorrow morning even if it's at the same stipulations as the previous contract.

Can someone explain what this thread is about? What is a USW strike?
