Believe it or not, the US Marshals Service in Houston is arresting people for not paying their outstanding federal student loans.

Paul Aker says he was arrested at his home last week for a $1500 federal student loan he received in 1987.

Why did college tuition get so high? Baby boomers are sitting in the college offices, maybe they can enlighten us.

Our reliable source with the US Marshal in Houston say Aker isn't the first and won't be the last.

That's some solid inside info right there.

I don't understand how these folks just aren't paying their student loans. Isn't that shite killing their credit or do they care?

They'll get yo arse for student loans. Can't discharge in Ch 7.

Glad they going after some of these folks. They are the reason student loan interest rates aren't 3% anymore.

I don't agree with people not being held responsible for their own choices, but I'm also not sure that debtor's prison is the right answer. They should at least have the option of declaring bankruptcy if it really came to that.

I thought Obama was forgiving all student loans.

Not allowing these loans to be discharged is why they are so affordable. That's why there's so much education on them. I recall my last semester at LSU in 99 we had to attend an 'exit interview' of sorts with a small group of people and this guy telling us how important it was to pay back federally subsidized student loans. I remember it being my first time to go in Lod Cook(was pretty new at the time).

We got rid of debtor's prison a long time ago. I can't believe that anyone would support this crap. If you do I hope you get locked up for being late on your cable bill

People don't care. I know someone who hasn't filed taxes in two years. They work in the service industry. Applied for the extension, waited until the last day of the extension period, tried to get on Turbo Tax, computer wasn't cooperating... and just never did it.

This same person dines/orders out for every meal and goes out for drinks every night. The maybe $100 average they make per day is blown every night.

I can't imagine this person trying to buy a car or any other big purchase.

It's the government. By definition, they have to spend more than they make.

Sometimes I think about why ever pay them back? Bad credit?

Ok. Rent forver. Buy cars cash. frick it.

For some people, $400-$600 a month is a huge deal, like life changing money. They'd rather have bad credit than spend that money every month, especially if they got a useless degree and are working a job that doesn't afford them the ability to repay the loan and have a decent life.
