You can work the summer before your first semester sunshine. Not really that hard.

So,that's still confusing as hell. I have one starting LSU in the Fall under Honors TOPS. How much should I expect to pay per semester?

Edit-I was just told she gets an additional $800 semester cash "award" and we get a $1000 off per year because I graduated from LSU.

semester.

My daughter got her letter a week ago stating what tops was going to cover. Her out of pocket was little more than what the OP has, but not much more

There's no summer between now and then

No one knows how much TOPS is going to fund for this coming fall. It all depends on the budget defecit, which will not be known until June. Even if TOPS is full funded, because of the new legislation passed, it will only cover up to the total amount of this years tuition. the legislature capped it last year.

This means that if LSU raises its tuition ~500 dollars like it has done every year for the past couple of years TOPS will not cover the difference between this years tuition and next years tuition.

TOPS will eventually be completely cut, it's a matter of time.

Gotcha. I guess that's why I opened that college fund back in 1999. I won't have enough to cover the whole thing but I should have most of it. With two more coming up.

Alex Gissel, an LSU junior, said when he started school he'd budgeted what he would owe for the next four years based on the "promise" of what the state would give him for TOPS.

"We're a middle class family. This means we're going to have to take loans out," Gissel said. "My parents have had to work overtime to pay for my college and so have I. I may be in debt by the time I leave."

You mean work for an education? Not hamded to you?

Good for him. I bet he works harder in school somce he is paying for it.

that is with TOPS footing ~40%.

Cost me a little over 6300 for full time tuition and fees this past semester

I am so glad I didn't come out of LSU with debt. Thanks you TOPS from the early 2000's

This is the kinda bullshite that gets me worked up. I can't stand titty babies like that. Ive held two and three jobs at a time while at LSU so I didn't have to take out loans.

These are the kind of kids that expect to get a 9-5 40 hour/week job paying 60-70k out of school.

$6k out of pocket is still cheaper than many private high schools. Even if a kid has to take out student loans due to no family help money wise they are still getting a college education for $50k or less.

Maybe you should of studies harder in high school.

Why is that unreasonable for certain professions? Maybe you should set your goals higher.

I had the Honors TOPS out of highschool. kept it all 4 years.

TOPS doesn't pay for things like food/rent/car insurance/clothes/gas etc.

It didn't pay for my extra year of school I had to take due to a change in major either.

can't help but wonder how many of these people barking about these "hand outs" took advantage of them when they had the chance.

taxpayers using taxpayer money doesn't constitute a hand out though

I absolutely benefited from TOPS and allowed me to graduate debt free

my parents also paid state taxes their entire lives

is using public roads and public parks a handout?

Wasn't me. TOPS started with 1997 HS grads

I graduated in 1996. So no TOPS for me.
