(Reuters) - United Airlines Chief Executive Oscar Munoz on Tuesday issued an apology for the treatment of a passenger who was dragged on Sunday from his seat on a United plane, as the company faced a worldwide backlash for its handling of the incident.

"I'm sorry. We will fix this," Munoz said in a statement a day after he had defended the company in a memo that contained no apologies to the passenger. On Tuesday, as the storm of criticism continued, Munoz changed course.

"I deeply apologize to the customer forcibly removed and to all the customers aboard," he said in the statement. "No one should ever be mistreated this way."

Video showing a man who appeared to be Asian being snatched from his seat Sunday evening and dragged from United Airlines Flight 3411 sparked global outrage that escalated as consumers in China, a key United market, called for boycotts of the airline. Regulators in the United States said they are reviewing the incident.

The PR got hold of him...

The fricked up by not increasing the voucher credit until another volunteer stepped forward.

Too bad it took them this long to figure that out.

I hate this world.

Break the law, inconvenience dozens of people in the process, act like a complete psychopath, become a hero.

Let the downvotes pour in, you morons are the reason we have safe spaces everywhere and people are afraid of Chick fil As.

Yup, currently a 20 million dollar voucher would have been a better investment, and that's hilarious to me

The airline already inconvenienced every single person on that flight. Second, he didn't act like a psychopath he was taken out of his seat against his own free will and knocked unconscious. Geez what great world.

What the hell are you talking about? I've never seen less than 15 cars in their drive thru at lunch. Even in very liberal cities. Their growth had been tremendous, even after the controversy. I think you're the one that needs to get over it.

Seems like the CEO of such a major company should have a better grasp of the public pulse and brand image.

Yes the airline fricked up bad we can all agree on that. When you decide to exercise your free will by not complying with the law you open yourself up to the possibility of something going poorly for you.

No idea how you can watch that video and then learn of the guys past and not easily conclude he has serious mental issues.

You clearly do hate this world so you make up one of your own to complain from. You sound like a snowflake, to be honest.

No one wants to be treated that way. What is your deal?
