I saw something similar to that first account here in Georgia just in the past week while driving home from work after dark. I just chalked it up to meteors. I only could see them for a few seconds.

The wife and I were driving home a couple weeks ago and saw an extremely bright "falling star". Left a streak across the night sky. I've never seen any other falling star that bright.

I have no clue. Just the way the lights show up and go out makes me think they are flares. Just my option.
